1. BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Shunsuke Uemura is a professor at the Graduate School of Information Science, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan. He has been a member of the research staff at MITI's Electrotechnical Laboratory, a visiting researcher at MIT's Electronic Systems Laboratory, and a professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. He received a BE, an ME, and a Dr. Eng. from Kyoto University in 1944, 1946 and 1975 respectively. His research interests include database systems and bioinformatics. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, ACM, and the fellow of the IEICE and the Information Processing Society of Japan.

Database engineering

[1] S. Uemura, An Introduction to Database Systems, 237 pages, OHMsha-press, 1979. This book is one of the first technical contributions to the field of database engineering in Japan. It has been widely accepted and used for courses at many universities.
[2] S. Uemura, T. Yuba, A. Kokubu, R. Ooomote and Y. Sugawara, The Design and Implementation of a Magnetic Bubble Database Machine, Information Processing 80, pp. 433 - 438, Oct. 1980. This paper describes the national project the candidate headed. It discusses an architecture of a database machine using magnetic bubble memory. The experimental machine was demonstrated at the IFIP World Congress 80 held in Tokyo, Japan, where the paper was also presented. (Principal author and leader of group).
