Shunsuke Uemura is a professor at the Graduate School of Information
Science, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan. He has been
a member of the research staff at MITI's Electrotechnical Laboratory,
a visiting researcher at MIT's Electronic Systems Laboratory, and a
professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. He
received a BE, an ME, and a Dr. Eng. from Kyoto University in 1944,
1946 and 1975 respectively. His research interests include database
systems and bioinformatics. He is a member of the IEEE Computer
Society, ACM, and the fellow of the IEICE and the Information
Processing Society of Japan.

describes the national project the candidate headed. It discusses an
architecture of a database machine using magnetic bubble memory. The
experimental machine was demonstrated at the IFIP World Congress 80
held in Tokyo, Japan, where the paper was also presented. (Principal
